Two days learning the skills required during winter to stay safe whilst walking in the mountains. We will give you the opportunity to walk in some stunning environments, whilst developing your skills and improving your technique. A chance to use both ice axe and crampons, to give you a basic level of understanding of avalanche avoidance. Building emergency shelters, and of course winter navigation all under the expert guidance of our Instructors.
All we ask from you is a good level of hill walking fitness and the desire to experience winter walking.

Day 1: Departure
Arrive at the designated meeting point for a welcome briefing and to discuss aspirations. Kit check and weather update with a prompt departure. Kit fitting and readiness is essential before we set off.
Winter skills session
Looking at movement skills and how to carry the additional equipment required in Winter. Further days would be required to practice all the skills required to be safe in the Winter Mountains, but this day is a great opportunity to get out for the first time and experience it. Discovering how the Winter Season changes the landscape and risks associated with that. We will focus on movement in crampons, avalanche awareness and basic self arrest techniques.
Back to base
Arrive back at base for a debrief, de-kit and a rewarding drink, chat and relax.
Day 2: Departure
Building on Day1, Kit check and weather update with a prompt departure.
Day 2: Winter Skills
Meet up and review our plans for the day. Analyse the weather forecast and plan your journey. Looking at what you learnt the previous day, you will be asked to make suggestions on the journey and plan for the day. Don’t worry, the ultimate decision will be left to our fully qualified guides. Then we look in more detail at Navigation in Winter, Emergency shelters, some assisted ascending and descending on tricky ground.
Back to base
Arrive back for a review of the two days, questions, reference material and advice about what next for you as a winter walker. Then a cuppa, cake and relax.
